1362 Waldshut-Tiengen Waldshut is situated at an elevation of 340 m near the foothills of the southern Schwarzwald (Black Forest) mountain region on the right bank of the upper Rhine river, which forms the border to Switzerland. Walsdhut was founded in 1249 as administrative centre within the Habsburg possessions in the region (Anterior Austria; see map). The buildings in the beautiful old town centre mostly date from the 16th to 18th centuries. On 1st January 1975, the city of Waldshut was merged with the city of Tiengen (6 km away) and the municipality of Gurtweil.

The oldest of the remaining town gates is the Oberes (Schaffhauser) Tor [bottom right]. The oldest parts of the tower date back to the 13th century. Until 1864, the tower also served as the town's dungeon.
