The Spreewald (Spree Woods) is certainly one of the most romantic regions of Germany's state of Brandenburg. Since 1990 the area where the river Spree branches into some 300 flow lines (total length of all branches together is 970 km!) is protected as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (see also list of other UNESCO heritage sites).

The forest inn Wotschofska [left] was built as a forester's lodge in the late 19th century on one of the numerous islands in the forest.
