Schrozberg

ru: Шроцберг

1790 Schrozberg Schrozberg is situated at an elevation of 480 m in the Hohenlohe plain between the rivers Jagst and Tauber.

The earliest mention of Scrotzperch in a document dates from 1249. The municipality of Schrozberg obtained the status of a town after the incorporation in 1970 of the formerly independent communities of Bartenstein (mentioned 1247), Ettenhausen (mentioned 1334), Riedbach (mentioned as Riethbach in 1054), Spielbach, Leuzendorf (mentioned as Lutesdorf 1248) and Schmalfelden (mentioned as Smalefelden in 1033).

Bartenstein had been in possession of the counts of Hohenlohe since 1555. In 1638 Bartenstein became the residence of the counts (1744 princes of the empire) of Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Bartenstein. Schrozberg was in possession of the line Hohenlohe-Weikersheim until 1671 when it passed to line Hohenlohe-Langenburg who owned it until 1701 when it passed to Hohenlohe-Ingelfingen-öhringen. In 1806 Bartenstein, Ettenhausen, Riedbach and Schmalfelden became part of Württemberg. Leutzendorf and Spielbach became part of Bavaria in 1803 before finally passing to Württemberg in 1810.

The moated Schrozberg castle was begun in 1441 in place of an older stronghold. It is assumed that the famous Götz (Gottfried) von Berlichingen (ca.1480–1563) spent his youth here. The western wing and the round tower were added in 1625, the eastern wing was added in the 18th century. The park was laid out in 1701. In the 18th century the princes of Hohenlohe moved their residence to Ingelfingen. Today Schrozberg castle is the seat of the municipal council of Schrozberg.
