Neuendorf

1909 Neuendorf Neuendorf is situated in the southern part of the island Hiddensee, west of the island Rügen on the German Baltic Sea coast.

The community of Neuendorf consists of two parts: the older Plogshagen, which dates back to the 13th century, and Neuendorf proper, which was founded around 1700 when the old settlement of Glambek was moved to a new location ('Neuendorf' actually means 'new village'). The whole island of Hiddensee forms one municipality (Insel Hiddensee), consisting of the four communities Grieben, Kloster, Vitte and Neuendorf. Since the 1st of January 2005, Insel Hiddensee is part of the administrative union Amt West-Rügen.

The well-known German writer Hans Fallada (b.1893 Greifswald, d.1947 Berlin) wrote his most famous book "Kleiner Mann, was nun?" ('Little Man, What Now?') in Neuendorf. The book was published in 1932 and depicts the struggle and problems of a young couple in Germany in the grip of unemployment. Many parts of the story were inspired by Fallada's own experiences while working as a newspaper reporter in Neumünster.
