Stari Slankamen is situated at an altitude of 80 m on the right bank of the river Danube in the Vojvodina region of northern Serbia.
In Roman times, it was the site of a fort called Acumincum.
Historically, the place is best-known as the site of the crucial victory in 1691 of the Imperial army under the command of Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden
over the Turks, which ended the Ottoman rule of the whole region. A new settlement, Novi Slankamen (Neu-Slankamen), was founded in 1783
in order to secure the military border against the Ottoman Empire.
The mineral springs of Stari Slankamen were already known during the Ottoman period. The waters (18.5°C) are used for the treatment of diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system, rheumatic and gynecological diseases.
It is interesting to note that the painter of the picture on the glass apparently was not too familiar with the cyrillic alphabet.
In the labelling the writer used the latin character 'k' instead of the cyrillic 'к' and also used
the latin character 'm' (which looks the same as 'т', the lower case cursive 't' in cyrillic)
instead of 'м' (lower case 'm' in cyrillic).
