Thörl is among the oldest places in Styria where iron was wrought.
Hammer mills existed from the 14th century, armourers started to work in 1469.
Metal-working industry producing special wires and structral steel still is present in Thörl.
Only ruins are left of 
Schachenstein castle, which
had been built in 1471 as the last stronghold castle in Styria.
