2549 Frohburg Frohburg is situated at an elevation of 176 m on the river Wyhra about halfway between Leipzig and Chemnitz in northern Saxony. The municipality has a population of about 11,000 (2008).

The oldest written mentions of strongholds in the area date from the end othe 10th century. In 1198 Frohburg was first mentioned as a settlement, and in 1233 as a town. However, it did not have a town charter at that time yet. A town charter was issued for the first time only in 1831. In 2008 the administrative union Frohburg was founded which encompassed the municipalities of Frohburg and Eulatal. The administrative union was dissolved only one year later when Eulatal was formally incorporated into the municipality of Frohburg.

The Town Hall [top picture] of Frohburg was built in 1887. In front of it, the Centaur's Fountain was created in 1899 by the sculptor August Herzig. Its one-metre-high bronze statue depicts a centaur fighting for his life with a lindworm. The statue miraculously avoided being melted down during World War II. It was instead discovered in a scrapyard by a Leipzig resident and finally returned to its original location after the end of the war.

Frohburg castle [bottom left picture] was probably founded as a stronghold at the end of the 10th century. The Romanesque towers date from between 1220 and 1250. The present castle was probably erected in the 16th century on the foundations of the old stronghold. The façades and parts of the interior decorations were created during the Baroque and Classicist periods.
