Bassins

2579 Bassins Bassins is situated at an elevation of 753 m in the canton Vaud, about 9 km north of the chef-lieu of the district Nyon. The municipality has a population of about 1,100 (2008).

The earliest written document mentioning Bassinges dates from AD 974, the latinised version of the name, Bassiniacum, is found in documents as early as 1148; the modern name, Bassins, is documented since 1164. A small priory of the Cluniac abbey of Payerne had existed near the church of Notre-Dame at Bassins. Although the priory was officially dissolved only in 1536 it had probably already been abandoned by the monks in the 14th century. When Vaud was conquered by Berne in 1536, Bassins came under the administration of the bailiwick of Nyon. After the collapse of the Ancien régime, during the period of the Helvetic Republic (1798–1803), Bassins became part of the canton Léman, which thereafter merged into the canton Vaud.
