| MAGYARORSZÁG | HUNGARY |
| megye: Győr-Moson-Sopron |
In the 1st century AD the Romans founded the military camp Ad Flexum.
The castle of Moson (German: Wieselburg) was built by King Stephen I
of Hungary (b.969, king 997, d.1038), while the fortress of
Magyaróvár (German: Ungarisch-Altenburg)
(originally called Óvár, 'old castle')
was erected by the lords of Győr in the 13th century. At the end of the 18th century
the castle was owned by Duke Albrecht of Sachsen-Teschen,
son-in-law of Maria-Theresia of Austria and viceroy of Hungary. Moson, Magyaróvár and
the village of Lucsony were merged in 1939.
The Baroque
parish church of Moson was built 1777-1787 in place of
a medieval church which was destroyed by the Turks.
