Buchen (Odenwald)

ru, sr, uk: Бухен

Buchen (Odenwald) is situated at an elevation of 337 m on the seam between the south-eastern Odenwald and the Bauland area, along the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes, about 25 km northwest of the district town Mosbach and 70 km east of Mannheim. The municipality of Buchen (Odenwald) consists of 14 city areas Bödigheim, Buchen-Stadt (Buchen-City), Eberstadt, Einbach, Götzingen, Hainstadt, Hettigenbeuern, Hettingen, Hollerbach, Oberneudorf, Rinschheim, Stürzenhardt, Unterneudorf and Waldhausen. The municipality has a population of about 17,700 (2015).

3190 Buchen Buchen was first mentioned in the Lorscher Codex, the deeds of the Lorsch Monastery, where it appears as Buchheim, and makes a number of donations to the monastery in the year 773. In the second half of the 13th Century Buchen was given the right to call itself a town. In 1303/1309 Buchen was sold to the Archbishop of Mainz and remained his territory for 500 years. In 1346 Buchen formed the Federation of Nine Towns (Neunstädtebund) along with Amorbach, Aschaffenburg, Dieburg, Külsheim, Miltenberg, Seligenstadt, Tauberbischofsheim and Walldürn. After the defeat of the Peasants' Revolt (1525) the Nine City Federation was dissolved and Buchen lost its right to self-government. In 1803 after the dissolution of the electorate of Mainz and as a result of decisions made by national deputies, Buchen was assigned to the Principality of Leiningen; in 1806 it became part of the grand duchy of Baden. Buchen was already the seat of a district office (Amt) in the Prince Elector Era of Mainz. It retained this function during the rule by Leiningen and Baden. In 1938 the district (Landkreis) Buchen was formed. In 1973, the former districts Buchen and Mosbach were merged into the new district Odenwaldkreis, renamed Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis in 1974.

The bottom left picture shows a view of the old town hall. The building was created in late Baroque style in 1723 after a large fire in 1717 had destroyed the previous town hall. The old town hall remained the seat of the city administration until shortly after the end of World War  I.
