Sušice is situated at an altitude of 472 m on the river Otava in the Plzeň region of western Bohemia, about 25 km southeast of the district town Klatovy. The municipality of Sušice has a population of about 11,100 (2017).

3375 Sušice Sušice (German: Schüttenhofen) originated most likely around the end of the 8th century as a settlement near the Otava River, a gold-mining area. In the 12th century it was owned by the bavarian Counts of Bogen. The first written mention of the place dates from 1233. In 1273 it formally became part of Bohemia and became a fortified Royal Bohemian Town. During the Hussite Wars in the first half of the 15th century Sušice was a Hussite town. After the Battle of the White Mountain (Bíla hora, today part of Prague) in 1620, most of the properties were confiscated. In 1707 a large fire devastated the town. Sušice is known for the production of safety matches (Solo match factory) which began in 1838 and has continued to the present. After the end of manorialism, Schüttenhofen / Sušice in 1850 became a municipality and the seat of a district court. In 1868 it also becam the seat of the new district Schüttenhofen. Until 1918 it remained part of the Austrian monarchy. Following the Munich Agreement in 1939, parts of the town (Brabschow and Zalusch) were assigned to the district Bergreichenstein, which itself was re-assigned to Germany. After the war, Vrabcov und Záluží were returned to Sušice and the remaining German-speaking population was expelled. The district Sušice was dissolved in 1960 and was incoporated into the district Klatovy.

The chapel of the Holy Guardian Angels [background, top] is located 85 meters above the town on top of the Stráž hill. It was built in 1681/1682 and consecrated in 1683. A cloister was built around the chapel in 1735, with four smaller chapels at the corners and three gates. The corner chapels are dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Stará Boleslav, St. John of Nepomuk, St. Florian and St. Mary Magdalene. During the reforms of Emperor Joseph II, the chapel was closed in 1791, but was reopened in 1799 following urgent petitions of the town of Sušice. The chapel is open only during religious services, which are held once a week from the beginning of June until the end of August, and for the Sušice pilgrimage in early September. A Way of the Cross leading up to the chapel was opened in 2010.
