813 Balatonalmádi Balatonalmádi is one of the most picturesque holiday resorts situated on the northern shore of Lake Balaton (German: Plattensee) near its northeastern end. The tradition of Balatonalmádi as a bathing resort began in 1877.

According to a legend, deep in the middle of Lake Balaton, there is a church with a girl inside, who is feeding the silky waters of the lake with her tears. In reality, freshwater is arriving from the southwest from the river Zala, and from the north from several creeks. Covering an area of 591 square km (length 77 km, width 4–10 km), it is the largest lake of Central Europe situated at an elevation of 104 m above sea level. The depth of the lake on average is only 3–4 m (with a maximum of 12 m) so that in midsummer the water temperature is seldom less than 22°C and sometimes can reach up to 27–28°C. Lake Balaton has no natural outflow, and until the completion in 1863 of the Sió canal, which drains the waters to the river Danube, the water level largely depended on the climate.
