Balatonfüred is situated at an altitude of 117 m on the northern shore of Lake Balaton in Veszprém county. The resort town
is considered to be the capital of the northern lake shore and is a yachting destination. It is also a location for fishing (carp being the most common
catch) although the introduction of eels and other non-indigenous species has caused ecological damage in recent years. Balatonfüred was first
mentioned in 1211. Archaeological finds show, however, that the place was already inhabited in Roman times. From the 17th century there are written
references to the thermal springs located here. The place experienced its heyday in the first half of the 19th century as an elegant meeting place
for leading cultural figures and politicians.
