1266 Körmend Körmend is situated at an elevation of 191 m on the river Rába (Raab) in the Vas district of western Hungary. The place was first mentioned in 1244 in a document of King Béla IV of Hungary. In 1604 Emperor Rudolf II endowed Count Ferenc Battyány with the old castle and the estates of Körmend with the obligation to fortify the place against the Turks. During the 18th century the Princes of Battyány-Strattmann rebuilt the castle as a magnificent Baroque château as their main residence. The castle remained in possession of the family until 1945. Körmend obtained the status of a town in 1979.

The former riding school (fedett lovarda) [left] of the castle is used as a theatre today.
