Lichtenberg

ru: Лихтенберг

2637 Lichtenberg Lichtenberg is situated at an elevation of 564 m on a hill high above the Selbnitz valley in the very north of Upper Frankonia, about 25 km northwest of the district town Hof, close tothe Bavarian-Thuringian border. The municipality has a population of about 1,100 (2009) and, together with Issigau, forms the administrative union Lichtenberg.

The origins of Lichtenberg castle go back to the early 9th century. In the 12th century, the dukes of Andechs-Merania rebuilt the castle. Both castle and village were inherited by the counts of Orlamünde in 1248. The oldest document mentioning Lichtenberg, already with the status of a town, dates from 1337. In 1444, at that time owned by the barons of Waldenfels (see Wallenfels), the town could fend of an attack by the troops of Nuremberg. From the late Middle Ages onward Lichtenberg was part of the margraviate Brandenburg-Bayreuth, which, together with Brandenburg-Ansbach, was sold to Prussia in 1791 by the last margrave, Karl Alexander of Brandenburg-Ansbach and Bayreuth. From 1792 Lichtenberg was then part of the Prussian territory Ansbach-Bayreuth until 1806 when the territory was occupied by French troops. In 1807, in the Treaties of Tilsit, Ansbach-Bayreuth was ceded to France and in 1810 became part of the kingdom of Bavaria.
