2743 Тител / Titel Titel is situated at an elevation of 75 m on the river Tisa in the southern part of the Bačka region known as Šajkaška in the autonmous province Vojvodina of northern Serbia. Titel has a population of about 5,250 (2011). Titel is the seat of the municipality (opština) of the same name, which encompasses Vilovo, Gardinovci, Lok, Mošorin, Titel and Šajkaš. The municipality has a population of about 15,550 (2011).

During the Roman times, Titulum was a military post. In the 9th century Titel became the seat of the Bulgarian prince Salan who ruled in the Bačka region. The earliest written mention of Titel dates from 1077 and refers to the foundation of a monastery. The region was conquered by Hungary in the 10th century. In 1526 the region became part of the Ottoman empire. Since 1699, the town was part of the Habsburg Monarchy. It was included in the Habsburg 'Military Frontier', also known as 'Military Border' or 'Military Krajina', a 'cordon sanitaire' against incursionns from the Ottoman Empire. Between 1750 and 1763, the town was under civil administration (in the Batsch-Bodrog County of the Habsburg Kingdom of Hungary), until it was returned to the jurisdiction of the Military Frontier (Šajkaš Battalion). In 1848/1849, Titel was part of Serbian Vojvodina, a Serb autonomous region within the Habsburg Empire. Between 1849 and 1872, it was again part of the Military Frontier, and after 1872, it came under civil administration as a part of the Bács-Bodrog County within the Habsburg Kingdom of Hungary (part of Austria-Hungary). After 1918, the town became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, the later Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

Mileva Marić (1875–1948), physicists and first wife of Albert Einstein, was born in Titel.
