Schömberg

sr, uk: Шемберг ru: Шёмберг

Schömberg is situated at an elevation of 650 m on a plateau between the rivers Enz and Nagold in the district Calw in the north of the Black Forest region. The municipality of Schömberg includes the communities of Bieselsberg, Schwarzenberg, Langenbrand and Oberlengenhart and has a population of about 8,100 (2015).

3245 Schömberg: Süddeutsche Heilanstalt Schamberg was first mentioned in a written document, a deed of donation of the monastery at Hirsau, in 1177. Being part of the district of Liebenzell, it was purchased in 1603 by the duchy of Württemberg from the margraviate of Baden. For most of its history, Schömberg, like most villages in the Black Forest region, remained an insignificant forest village. This changed when, in 1888, the first climatic spa hotel was opened. Specialising in the treatment of tuberculosis, the first one of its kind in Germany, this became the foundatin of Schömberg's profile as a spa town. During its flourishing period after World War II, Schömberg provided rooms for up to 2,500 guests. the community of Schwarzenberg was incorporated into Schömberg in 1971; Tannmühle was separated from Schömberg in 1974 and was incorporated into the municipality of Wildbad. Today's municipality was formed in 1975 by a merger of the former independent municipalities of Schömberg, Bieselsberg, Langenbrand and Oberlengenhardt.

The Süddeutsche Heilanstalt ('South German Sanatorium') [left] was founded in 1899, originally under the name Dr. Herrlinger’s Lungenheilanstalt ('sanatorium for diseases of the lung of Dr. Herrlinger'). From 1909 onwards, it became one of the centres for the treatment of tuberculosis. In 1912 the sanatorium was renamed Sanatorium Schwarzwaldheim. In 1925 the sanatorium was taken over by the Imperial Insurance Institution for Employees (Reichsversicherungsanstalt für Angestellte). After World War II, the sanatrium was enlarged and was owned by the Federal Insurance Institution for Employees (Bundesversicherungsanstalt für Angestellte). During the 1960s, the building did not meet any more the standards required for a modern sanatorium and hence was demolished. In its place, a new building, the later Schwarzwald-Rehaklinik, was built. When the latter was moved to a new location, the sanatorium was taken over by the Berufsförderungswerk Schömberg as the 'Zentrum II'.
