Abertamy (German: Abertham) is situated at an elevation of 900 m in the valley of the Byst/rcaron;ice (Rote Wistritz)
river in the Ore mountains, about 16 km north-northwest of the district town and regional capital, Karlovy Vary.
The municipality has a population of about 900 (2023).
Miners started to settle in the area between 1525 and 1529. The first written mention of Abertamy is from 1529. In 1579, Abertamy was granted
the staus of a royal mining town. Silver mining, however, ended in 1622 and only mining for tin continued. Abertamy lost its town rights, and
the area was forcibly re-Catholicised after the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648). In the mid-19th century manufacturing of gloves began and
expanded in the 20th century. In 1876, Abertamy obtained the town status again. After World War II, in 1945, a large part of the
German-speaking population was expelled and local industry was nationalised. A large German-speaking minority remained here until the 2000s,
but it is gradually disappearing.
