Krosno Odrzańskie

DE: Crossen an der Oder, Krossen an der Oder

1600 Krosno Odrzańskie Krosno Odrzańskie (German: Crossen an der Oder) is situated at an altitude of 36 m at the rivers Odra (Oder) and Bóbr (Bober) in the Lubuskie (Lebus) province of western Poland. Crosno was first mentioned in 1005 and was chartered as a town in 1201. Due to its important strategic location it played an important role in the protective system at the western borders of Poland during the 11th to 13th centuries. A stone castle was built by the Silesian Piasts in the 13th century. When the Piast dynasty had become extinct in 1476, the area became part of Bohemia in 1482. After the partitions of Poland it became part of Prussia and remained so until 1945. Today, Krosno Odrzańskie is the capital of the Krośnieński county and has a population of about 20,000.

The bottom right picture shows the parish church of Our Lady goes back to a church probably founded by St. Jadwiga (Hedwig) of Silesia (ca.1174–1243). The late Gothic brick church of the 14th century was replaced by the present Baroque construction between 1705 and 1729. Hedwig was a daughter of Duke Berthold IV of Andechs-Meranien and was married to Henry I of Silesia, who became Duke of Silesia in 1202. Hedwig and Henry generously endowed many hospitals and monasteries which also helped spreading the German civilization in Silesia. Hedwig was canonized in 1267 and became the patron saint of Silesia. Her feast day in the 17th of October.

Krosno Odrzańskie is the birth place of the German poet and writer KLABUND (real name Alfred Henschke) (1891–1928).
