1641 Bad Wildungen Bad Wildungen is situated at an elevation of 275 m in the Kellerwald/Edersee region of northern Hesse. The first mention of a village Wildungen dates from AD 800 and is found in a register of the monastery of Hersfeld. This viallage was situated to the east of today's town in the valley of the Wilde stream. A castle founded around 1200 by the Landgraves of Thuringia. The town of Alt-Wildungen began to develop beneath this castle, which later came in possession of the Counts of Waldeck. Opposite of Alt-Wildungen the town of Nieder-Wildungen was founded in 1242 by the Thuringian Landgraves and also became aprt of the Waldeck domains in 1263. Both settlements began to develop separately and at least since 1358 wer known as "the two towns of Wildungen". The mineral springs of Wildungen came in possession of the counts of Waldeck in 1495. During the Thirty Years' War (1818–1848) Wildungen and the whole area were looted and devastated repeatedly by Swedish and Imperial troops. The modern history of the spa began in 1855 when the Wildunger Mineralquellen-Aktiengesellschaft (Wildungen Mineral Springs Corporation) was founded. Many new guest visietd the spa after the town was connected to the railroad system in 1884. In 1906 Nieder-Wildungen was renamed Bad Wildungen. When the Principality of Waldeck after a plebiscite became part of Prussia 1929 the spa was taken over by the Prussian state. Alt-Wildungen was merged with Bad Wildungen in 1940. After World War II the spa became a property of the state of Hesse. Since 2002 the spa is in possession of the municipality of Bad Wildungen.

The Georg-Viktor-Quelle [left] originally was called "Stadtbrunnen". The spring is named for Georg Viktor Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont (1831–1893, acc.1858). The first pump room (called "Schuppen", i.e. 'shed') was built at this site in 1698. This structure was replaced by a new building (depicted on the glass) in 1884. The current pump room was finally built in 1928/1929.
