Opawica

cs: Opavice de: Troplowitz, Tropplowitz

3754 Opawica Opawica is situated at an altitude of 378 m at the homonymous river (in Czech: Opavice, formerly in German: Goldoppa) which here forms the border to the Czech Republic, about 19 km southwest of the district town Głubczyce in the voivodship Opole of southwest Poland. The village has a population of about 120 (2011) and is part of the gmina (urban-rural administrative commune) Głubczyce.

Oppawicz was first mentioned in a document dating from 1256. After a partition in 1377 of the Moravian duchy of Troppau (founded 1318) it was part of the duchy of Jägerndorf (Krnov) until 1410. As part of Troppau it became part of Silesia in the 15th century. In 1410 it obtained the status of a market town. However, after the foundation of Olbersdorf (Město Albrechtice) its further development was stopped. With the conquest by Prussia of most of Silesia in 1742, the river Goldoppa became the border between Prussia and the Austrian monarchy and the village suddenly was divided into a Prussian part on the left, northern bank of the river and an Austrian part on the opposite side. While the Prussian village was called Troplowitz the Austrian village used to be called Dorf Tropplowitz (today Opavice as part of Město Albrechtice, Czech Republic).

Glass no. 3754 shows a view of the formerly Prussian village of Troplowitz. Comparing the picture with old picture postcards of the period, the far left building with the green roof depicted on the glass to the right of the building with the triangular gable (on the left) could be identified as the former Imperial (Prussian) post office; the building right next to it (also with a green roof) was the grocery store of Paul Marx.

The mountains in the background are labeled in German (freom left to right) Heinrichshöhe, Eichberg and Mondberg.
