3931 Kirchheimbolanden Kirchheimbolanden, the capital of the district Donnersbergkreis, is situated at an elevation of 340 m at the transition point of the Nordpfälzer Bergland to the Alzeyer Hügelland bordering to the east, about 25 km west of Worms and 30 km north-east of Kaiserslautern. The municipality has a population of about 7,900 (2019).

Kirchheim was first mentioned in 774, later it belonged to the lords of Bolanden. Towards the end of the 13th century it came in possession of the count of Sponheim-Bolanden-Dannenfels. In 1368 Kirchheim obtained the privileges of a town and became the residence of the counts. At the beginning of the 15th century it was inherited by the House of Nassau. Between 1737 and 1793 it was residence town of the princes of Nassau-Weilburg. After the Peace of Campo Formio (1797) the region fell to France (département du Mont-Tonnère with capital at Mainz/Mayence). After the Congress of Vienna (1815) and the Treaty of Munich (1816) the region became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria. The name Kirchheimbolanden originated in the 19th century. In 1818 it became a 'Landkommissariat' and in 1862 a district. Parts of the districts Kirchheimbolanden and Kaiserslautern were combined in 1900 into the district Rockenhausen. In 1939 the town became the seat of the administration of the district Kirchheimbolanden, which since 1946 was part of the German state of Rheinland-Pfalz. In 1969 the district was merged with most parts of the former district Rockenhausen and the new district was named Donnersbergkreis.

The Vorstadtturm ('Suburban Gate') or Unterer Turm ('Lower Gate') is one of the two remaining gate towers of the medieval fortifications of the town. It was built in the 14th century, the Baroque roof and clock were added in 1730.
