Sankt Gallen

ru, uk: Санкт-Галлен

0000 Sankt Gallen Sankt Gallen is situated at an elevation of 513 m in the valley of the stream Großer Billbach near its confluence with the river Enns at Altenmarkt bei Sankt Gallen, about 32 km northeast of the district town Liezen and about 93 km northwest of Styria's capital, Graz. The municipality is part of the National Park Gesäuse and has a total population of about 1,800 (2023).

In ancient times the local area was a mere wilderness east of the route from Wels via the Pyhrn pass to Liezen. Only after the monastery of Admont was founded in the 11th century, it was sought to connect the western part of the Enns valley with its north-facing lower reaches of the river bypassing the wild part of the river, the 'Gesäuse'. At that time the area which today is Sankt Gallen was called Silva nova, 'New Forest'. A church dedicated to St. Gall(us) was built in 1152 and was elevated to the status of a parish church in 1160. A tavern for travellers was set up on the new transport route and the place soon began to develop. In 1278 castle Gallenstein was built to protect the local property of the monastery, which also suggests a certain level of prosperity. In the 16th century, the iron industry was dominant in Sankt Gallen. The pig iron brought here from Eisenerz (then Innerberg), smelted in wheelworks (racing furnaces) and exported via the Enns and Danube. After the decline of this industry from the middle of the 19th century, tourism experienced an upswing. The first Sankt Gallen travel guide was published in 1879. The neighbouring municipality of Weißenbach an der Enns was merged into the municipality of Sankt Gallen in 2015.

The parish church Sankt Gallus [left, no. 4504: foreground right] was originally built in 1138–1152 and was incorporated into the monastery of Admont. In 1160 it obtained the status of a parish church, but remained incorporated to the monastery. The church was rebuilt in late Gothic style in 1515–1523. The nave was enlarged in Baroque style in 1736–1740. The tower was added in 1753.
