The market town Mauerkirchen is situated at an elevation of 407 m in the Mattig valley south-east of Braunau am Inn.

The parish church Mariä Himmelfahrt (Ascension of Our Lady) [background left] was first mentioned in a document of AD 813. The gothic church of the 14th/15th century was replaced by a neo-Gothic church (1867–1872) following a fire. Only the Gothic west tower of 1504 remained of the old church.
