3582 Bad Grönenbach Bad Grönenbach is situated at an elevation of 718 m in southern Bavaria, between Memmingen in the northwest and Kempten in the southeast. The municipality has a population of about 5,600 (2017). It is also the seat of the administrative union of the same name, adminiterug also the communes Wolfertschwenden and Woringen.

The oldest written document mentioning Grönenbach the place dates from 1099. From the 13th century on it was a fief of the princely abbey of Kempten. In 1485 it obtained the privileges of a market town. Following the secularisation of 1803, which ended the secular rule of all ecclesiastical states, Grönenbach became part of the electorate (1806 kingdom) of Bavaria. At the beginning of the 20th century, Grönenbach became known as a spa place, especially since in the late 19th century Sebastian Kneipp had stayed here for two years. In 1954 it was officially recognised as a Kneipp spa town. The predicate 'Kneipp medicinal spa' was awarded in 1996; at the same time the official name of the town became Bad Grönenbach.

The collegiate church of St. Philip and James [background] was first consecrated in 1136. It was replaced by a later Gothic church that was consecrated in 1445. The crypt of the church still dates from the former, Romanesque church. Since the turn of the 16th/17th century, it was used by both the Catholic and Protestant communities. In 1663 it was remodeled in Baroque style.

The Hohes Schloss ('upper castle') [bottom right inset] was built in the 12th cecntury. Since 1384 it belonged to the lords of Rothenstein, from 1482 to the lords of Pappenheim and since 1613 it was in possession of the Fugger family. From 1695 until 1803 it belonged to the princely abbey of Kempten. After 1803 it was used as a royal Bavarian district court. In 1996 it was acquired by the municipality of Bad Grönenbach and since then is used for exhibitions and wedding ceremonies.
