Oberstaufen

ru, sr, uk: Оберштауфен

4216 Oberstaufen Oberstaufen is situated at an elevation of 791 m in the west of the southwest-Bavarian district Oberallgäu, about 29 km southwest of the district town Kempten (Allgäu) and about 133 km southwest of Munich. The town lies on the European watershed that divides the river basins of the Rhine and the Danube. The municipality has a population of about 7,800 (2020).

The oldest known written mention of Stoufun is a document from the monastery of Sankt Gallen that dates from the year 868. In 1453 Staufen received market rights. Initially, Staufen was part of the Staufen dominion in the county of Königsegg-Rothenfels, which in 1804 exchanged the town for domains in Hungary with Emperor Franz I of Austria. Shortly after the Treaties of Brno and Pressburg (Bratislava) in 1805, the town was attached to the Kingdom of Bavaria, where it was placed in the court district of Immenstadt. In 1808, Staufen was merged with the neighbouring communities of Aach, Stiefenhofen and Thalkirchdorf into a single administrative unit but in 1818 it became an independent municipality by itself. With the opening in 1853 of the railway from Immenstadt to Lindau, Staufen was connected to the railroad network, which caused an economic growth for the town. Towards the end of the 19th century Staufen also became a health resort. In 1921, the town was officially renamed Oberstaufen. In 1949, the spa doctor Hermann Brosig introduced the Schroth cure. With the award of the title "Schroth health resort" in 1959, Oberstaufen was officially recognized as the only Schroth health resort in the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1969, Oberstaufen was recognised officially as a climatic health resort. In 1970, parts of the neighbouring municipality of Stiefenhofen were incorporated into Oberstaufen, and in 1972, there was a nenewed merger with Aach im Allgäu and Thalkirchdorf. In 1991, Oberstaufen achieved the highest level in the German classification of spa towns. Because of this, it would have the right to add the predicate Bad to its name; however, the town voluntarily does not make use of this right.

The parish church St. Peter and Paul [background centre, barely visible] goes back to the collegiate monastery of Staufen, which was founded in 1328. After the secularisation of the collegiate in 1806/1812, the church remained in use as the parish church of Staufen. Following a large fire in 1858, the present church was built from 1859 until 1863 in Gothic revival style. The foundations of the 65-metre-high tower still date from the 13th century.
