Dobřichovice is situated at an elevation of 205 m on the river Berounka, about 21 km southwest of
central Prague. The municipality has a population of about 3,800 (2023).
The first written mention of Dobřichovice dates from 1253, when it was donated to Knights of the Cross with the Red Star. With short breaks it was owned by this order throughout its existence. The original settlement was located one and a half kilometers north, at the site of present-day Karlík, and was the seat of the Dobřichův family. Dobřichovice Castle was built in the 16th century. During the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) the town and the castle were destroyed. Both were rebuilt after the war, but the castle was again destroyed by a large fire in 1779, after which it was rebuilt in its current, Baroque form. Until the abolition of patrimonial rule in 1848, Dobřichovice remained subject to the Knights of the Cross, who remained owners of the castle estate thereafter. In 1862, with the opening of the railway from Prague-Smíchov to Pilsen (Plzeň), Dobřichovice received a railway station, which was built on the right bank of the Berounka. In 1872, Dobřichovice suffered severe damage during a great flood of the Berounka. It was elevated to the status of a market town in 1876. The former town borough of Karlík became independent in 1992. Since 1997, Dobřichovice has the right to use a coat of arms and banner. In 2006, it was declared a town.
The first Berounka bridge at Dobřichovice [left, no. 4783, foreground]
was built in 1896 and replaced a ferry that had operated in this place until then. The bridge was ceremoniously opened in July 1897
and was given the name Franz-Josephs-Brücke, honouring Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. Due to its critical
condition, the bridge was demolished in 1990 and was replaced by a temporary bridge in 1991–1995. In 1995, construction of a
new bridge began, using the original pillars of the old bridge. The new bridge opened in 1996.
