0000 Strážnice Strážnice is situated at an elevation of 177 m at the river Velička, close to its confluence with the Morava river, in the Hodonín district of southern Moravia. The municipality has a population of about 5,600 (2015).

The oldest written documents date from the 13th century. The Strážnice castle was founded after 1260 in order to secure the eastern border of Moravia. The town at first belonged to the Crown, but was sold to the lords of Kravař (Krawarn) in the early 14th century. During the Hussite Wars of the 15th century, Strážnice was destroyed several times. In Strážnice castle, in 1458, Jiří z Poděbrad (George of Poděbrady), King of Bohemia, handed over to the Hungarian estates captured King Matthias Corvinus. During the National Movement of the Czechs in the 19th centurthe area of Strážnice devleoped into a cultural centre. The industrialisation started in the early 20th century. Today, Strážnice is also known as a cultural and tourist centre.

The Měsťanské skoly (municipal school) [left], today Purkyňovo gymnázium, was founded in 1899.
