Schwarzau im Gebirge is situated at an elevation of 618 m on the upper course of the Schwraza river, about
301 km northwest of the district town Neunkirchen, about 41 km west of
Wiener Neustadt, and about 45 km south of Sankt Pölten,
the capital of Austria's state of Lower Austria. As of 2025, the municipality has a population of 620.
In the BCE period, the place was already inhabited and was part of the celtic kingdom of Noricum. Later, in Roman times, it became part of the Roman province of Pannonia. In 1194, the area came in possession of the duchy of Steyr. Around 1220, it formed part of the Gutenstein domain, which was to remain the administrative centre for the region from then on until 1848 (Gutenstein district court). From 1595, the noble family of Hoyos held the patronage of the Gutenstein domain.
