Uherský Ostroh is situated at an elevation of 178 m in the valley of the river Morava, about 11 km southwest of the district town Uherské Hradiště and about 35 km southwest of the regional capital, Zlín. The municipality has a population of about 4,300 (2019).

3890 Uherský Ostroh Ostroh originated on an island in the river March. A royal castle likely founded in the 13th century, was first mention as Stenice castle in 1286, later as Ostroh ('spur') and Ostrov ('island'). Although intermittently pawned, the castle remained a royal possesssion until the 16th century. The town itself was first mentioned in 1371. The privileges as a town were confirmed in 1435. In 1625 the domains came in possession of the Liechtenstein family. For a while, the domains of Kromau (Moravský Krumlov) and Ostroh were united and at first were named Principality of Liechtenstein; however, this name already fell out of use by 1647. Only when the Liechtensteins obtained the county of Vaduz and the lordship of Schellenberg, this title was revived. In 1846 the town was renamed to Ungarisch-Ostra(u) and in 1850 it became the seat of a district court (until 1949). Since 1990 the old town is under monumental protection.

Uherský Ostroh castle [left] was founded in the second half of the 13th century. In 1560–1570 the old Gothic castle was rebuilt in Renaissance style by the lords of Kunowitz (Kunovice). From 1625 it served as the seat of the domains administration for the Liechtenstein family. In 1938 the municipality acquired the castle. In 1990 the complex was put under monumental protection. It is currently used as the communal and cultural centre of Uherský Ostroh.

The parish church of St. Andrew [right] was built in 1634. It was remodelled in late Baroque-Classicist style in the mid-18th century.

The former German name of Uherský Ostroh was Ungarisch-Ostra(u), while Mährisch-Ostrau was the former German name of Ostrava.
