Úsov (German: Mährisch-Aussee) is situated at an elevation of 280 m in the Úsovská vrchovina
(Úsov highlands) at the Doubravka stream, about 20 km south of the district town and regional capital,
Šumperk. The municipality has a population of about 1,200 (2023).
The oldest known written mention of this place dates from 1260. The castle was built around 1250. In the 16th century, Úsov was in the possession of the lords of Boskovice, and in 1597 it was acquired by the House of Liechtenstein (see Vaduz). In 1852 the Moravian-Silesian Silviculture School was founded in Úsov, which operated here until 1867. It was one of the oldest high schools in Moravia.
Úsov castle [left, no. 5012] originated in the 13th century. In 1487, this
castle was rebuilt by the lords of Vlašim. Smaller reconstructions were carried out by the lords of Boskovice. In 1691, the princes of
Liechtenstein had it remodeled in the Baroque style. Today, the castle houses a collection of trophies from Liechtenstein's hunting expeditions
to Africa, Asia and Europe.
